What is a normal iron count or percentage for your blood?

I tried to donate blood yesterday and they refused me after performing two tests. She said my iron count was very low. They accept 38 (%?) and higher and mine was 30. She said "you are very low honey" Now I am concerned. I know what foods are rich in iron and I eat them. I also saw on another question on here about iron that drinking tea could block iron absorption. What should my level be and does anyone have experience with this? I am not tired all the time...sometimes I am but not consistently or wher it is a problem. I might take one nap a week during the day I'm off from work. I'm not vegetarian and I eat a variety of foods, although I only red meats maybe 2 times a week. Any suggestions? I will call my doctor this week but I appreciate anyone's personal experience with this.

Yes. I had the exact same problem, and it got very frustrating. I am not sure about percentages, but I know that they are measured on a hemoglobin reader and anything under 12.5 they won't let you donate. Normal is between 13 and 16, but some people vary. If you donate often, it may be the main reason, and you may just need another week or so to replenish from before.
Dark green vegetables and red meet does help. Not only tea, but a any caffeine inhibits the iron, so you might want to stay away from tea and coffee a few days before.
After I was rejected twice, I began taking supplementary vitamins, and I have not had the problem since. However, it is not an instantaneous thing, and you need to take it daily for a week or two to actually absorb properly in the blood stream. Don't take a fast track and take 3 in one day either, because overdosing on iron can kill you.
Eat well and continue the selfless act of giving. Best of luck.
