Reoccuring intestinal infections?

Once again, I'm having symptoms from odd stomach noises to bloating, similar to an intestinal infection i had at the beginning of summer, only milder. I don't actually know if it's an infection but I'm trying to find out what would cause it. I also have food allergies and when I was younger I was tested for Celiac's disease and the biopsy showed signs of intestinal damage. But now I'm wondering if that's whats wrong. Any ideas? Also, could that cause a late period?

If you previously had celiac sprue and are not on a strict gluten-free diet, then your symptoms may be due to celiac sprue. Your GP could send blood for tissue transglutaminase and endomysial antibodies (these are IgA class antibodies that are specific for celiac disease). He should also check a total IgA level as 5% of celiac sprue patients have an IgA deficiency. Therefore, a decreased IgA level and normal celiac antibodies does not necessarily exclude celiac sprue.

Often, an upper endoscopy/enteroscopy with biopsies from the distal duodenum/jejunum are needed to look for signs of celiac sprue.

Celiac sprue should be taken seriously. If untreated, long-standing celiac sprue can cause iron deficiency anemia, metabolic bone disease, ..., and even EATL (enteropathy associated T-cell lymphoma, a particularly nasty type of lymphoma).

If you can, also obtain the original tests (and the original biopsy slides) from your initial celiac diagnosis.

Other causes of your symptoms are of course possible, and these range from irritable bowel syndrome to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

All the best.
