Intensive care is there any coming back from it? |
my uncles in i c u and had aburst ulcer he then went into hospital 10 days ago and got pnuemonia and had had 2 hear attacks coz of the pressure he was having just being able to breathe they have sedated him now i just wondered can you ever come back from intensive care honest answers only please thank you xx thanks for all answers so far also can you hear what people are saying whilst your sedated anyone remember Please be positive, as even despite a burst ulcer, a bout of pneumonia (probably from aspiration because of the fact that proper preparation would have been impossible with a burst ulcer), and two attacks of acute ischaemia from the (high) pressure he has had, your uncle is still there waiting to come out of the problems he has had. It would be totally inappropriate to compare an intensive care with a morgue or a mortuary, where you think no one comes out. He or she is taken to an intensive care unit just to do the best for a patient so that he or she walks out of it after having recovered. Please do not despair and lose hope. Cheer up. After all your uncle has gone through and is still there in the intensive care, it means that the things are being taken care in the best possible manner. It is a difficult time for you and your family and kindly accept my best wishes. Cheer up and keep your fingers crossed. I came back. My parents were told by the doctors to say their goodbyes. Yes of course they do ,I bet the majority of ic patients recover. my father was in ICU after a terrible road traffic collision, doctors said the prognosis was poor and not to hold out much hope...that was 25 years ago, apart from obvious scarring from the numerous injuries received as well as operations, you would never know that he spent 3 months in ICU. that's the whole point in being in intensive care, may be he is gravely ill but current medical advances and intensive care can help people survive even from dangerous condition, but there's always a chance that things can go wrong but I would hope and pray for his speedy recovery My brother woke up on his 47th birthday after ten days in a coma in ICU. He has lung problems and he got pneumonia. Pat R is right, the majority of people do come back. Many, many people recover fully after a stay in the ICU. (My grandfather did, and he was in his 80's) my friend had ivf treatment, and fell ill she was in ICU for few months while she was pregnant with twins and she came out of hospital pretty well, but loss one of the baby and gave birth to a healthy baby, but it took her a year to recover, she still isnt 100% better, its amazing how she recovered i thought she'll never make it.I hope your uncle gets better very soon, Yes, My grandad was in Intensive care. The treatment you get there is exceptional. Keep your chin up and i am sure things will be fine. my daughter has been in i c u a few times the first time for 3 months and on one occasion i was told she had hours to live but she is still here and doing very well so yes you can and i hope he makes a full recovery and wish you the best of luck my son when he was 4 weeks old was in intensive care he was 2 months early came home from special baby care then after a week of him being home he had caught bronchitis then it turned to pneumonia he was an awful site he was sedated and they had to put drips and tubes in him it was horrible they didn't no if he would pull through as his lung collapsed we all thought the worst but he has just had his 2nd birthday and is doing brilliantly my heart gose out to you and your family of course you can, have faith my sister worked as an nhs icu staff nurse for several years and a lot of patients make it through no bother. A will to live is often as much of the success as the medical help he receives and she has seen many patients pull through against odds because they were determined to get better. Depends on how bad thet are, i think most come back though. I hope your uncle gets better..... i think he will. i came back. 2 weeks in a coma and 28 days in icu. so there is a great chance ,when you are really sick no better place than icu trust me i've been there. best of luck well my neighbour as had all same things plus a lot more said there was no chance at all for her .she was in 2 weeks and is home now doing fine so miracles do happen .i really wish your uncle well.anne i,m sorry to hear of your uncle, my mum was in icu following lung yes of course you can come back and hopefully your uncle will make a good recovery and come back. He has been through alot so it will take time. It is possible to hear with sedation, although it depends on the strength and frequency of the sedation. he may hear at times and not at other times and he may hear fragments and not understand everything. It is good to keep talking to him however as hearing sounds will reassure him and encourage him. He will know you are there with him. Stay positive, alot of people come out of ICU and make a full recovery. There is a real feal attatched to the word ICU...try to remember that if your uncle is in there it means he is getting the very best treatment and is under close monitoring. Of course some people do die, but what will be will be, just be there and support your uncle when he wakes up. If the worst does happen it will be because nothing more could be done and it is sometimes better to let people go than them live a life in constant pain and sickness. My very best wishes are with you. xx I was in ICU for six months and I was given the last rites because they thought I was going to die. But I came out of it, al-though I am paralysed. If I had to give anybody advice, I'd say yes people can come out of ICU alive. Good luck and let me know how you do. If they have stopped sedating your uncle then they must feel his lung function is better. If he had an ulcer that burst, it depends on how big the opening and bleeding occurred. It was probably bad due to him experiencing pneumonia and 2 heart attacks. He may have had a chronic heart condition that was made worse due to the bleed and the diffcultly breathing due to blocked airway passages from the pneumonia. They will probably put him on some heavy duty IV antibiotics, give him respiratory treatments, and monitor his heart and him in the ICU for one more night until he is sent to a regular medical / surgical floor. He will be able to rest and recover on a regular floor. It is very diffcult for patients to rest in the ICU, mainly because they are so sick and the nurses and doctors and respiratory therapists are waking him at all hours of the day and night to maintain healing from this nightmare. He may experience mood swings, which is normal. He needs rest. He needs peace and quiet. He needs a good laugh, though. Laughter always heals the heart. yes all that means is you need special care for recovery. don't worry we all have complications from being sick. Intensive care means what it says on the door. You do get the best care possible and believe me many, many people leave in a much better condition than when they arrived. Best wishes to you and your uncle. My daughter has spent many many days and even months in the Pedi ICU units. She has Stage 4 chronic lung disease and chronic atelectasis I was told many times she would not make it and everytime she did. She is now 13 and as I sit here typing is again in the ICU on artificial support due to pneumonia. Many many people come back from intensive care and do just fine, intensive care is set up for persons that need to be monitored closely and have specialized treatment. There are however those that do not make it. I am sorry to hear about the troubles your grandfather is having and I will be honest. If his kidneys are shutting down odds are other vital systems will soon follow if they haven't already. Its hard to hear but I'm being honest. |
