Does having insulin resistance affect pregnancy?

I have insulin resistance and am 8 weeks pregnant. So far my doctor has not been concerned about this. I was taking chromium picolinate before to help maintain normal blood sugar levels. I stopped after I became pregnant. Should I worry about getting gestational diabetes? Should I be on a medication? The doctor said my blood sugar was just a little high. Aparently not high enough for me to be on medication.

If your sugar isn't high enough to concern your doctor yet, I wouldn't worry too much. Just buy a home monitor and check it yourself a few times a day. (before and after meals). Keep a journal and report any high numbers to your doctor.

You could have a chance of becoming a gestational diabetic. No medication is good medication while pregnant with the exception of the vitamins given during the pregnancy. If the doctor feels you can maintain an acceptable blood sugar level through diet and exercise while pregnant, then I would do so. I would also be sure I have a glucose monitor and check your levels often. You can get them for as little as 5 dollars for the monitor and 25 for the testing strips. I had gestational diabetes and the doctors never treated me for it. I ended up becoming a diabetic after my son's birth. Take care of yourself, drink plenty of water, eat right, and exercise and you may be able to control your sugar level while pregnant, if not I would insist on some kind of medication because many complications could occur if you become diabetic. Some could put both your and your baby's life in danger.

I got gestaional diabetes with my first baby, At the end of my pregnacy I had to take insulin. When he was born my sugars went back to normal. My Dr. said watch ur weight, Well I did all through the 9 monthes I gained a total of 15 pounds. When my son was 3 monthes old and I only weight 125 pounds I got it back, and it stayed. I am now type 1 diabetic. u need to watch what u eat.eat healthy. But everyone is different I know a woman who had 3 children gestainal with all 3 and took insulin and after her kids were born shes normal again. So some people they get it back and some dont. I hope this helps good luck
