Sjorgens,Hashimoto's Thyroiditis& Insulin Resistance?

I was diagnosed first with a bad thyroid, then it turned to Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, then insulin resistance (with weight gain) and now Sjorgens. Are these all related?

I forgot to add that im 33 years old

Hi. That is interesting the chain of events your diagnosis went. I would actually see a doc and ask to be tested for Celiac Disease. You don't list your symptoms but, the symtpoms of CD are so far wide and spred that they are often misdiagnosed for other things--including all that you already mentioned!! The test is a simple blood test and the treatment is even easier--a gluten free diet!! Because Celiac is a an autoimmune disease, patients oftenf ind they ahve secondary autoimmune diseases but those go away or lessen on the gluten free diet.
Please feel free to email me for more info.

Yes and no, first whoever gave you the diagnosis of "bad thyroid" was being lazy, because that couldn't be any less specific, except for maybe saying "you've got something wrong". Hashimoto's is a better diagnosis, and may actually be the specific disease you have, with Sjogren's being secondary to it. You can have multiple diseases, you just might not recognize all of the symptoms at one time. Now insulin resistance is a little bit different, but it could've just been that particular day, unless you had multiple tests done. Hashimoto's can cause weight gain, and have nothing to do with insulin resistance, or you could have both. Both Hashimoto's and Sjogren's are linked to non-hodgkins lymphoma, which is something you might want to be aware of, so your physician can monitor this if they aren't already doing so.

So to answer your question, to some extent they are related, but it's almost like a 6 degrees of separation type of link. "Bad" thyroid was actually Hashimoto's, which can cause weight gain, which can then cause insulin resistance, and Sjogren's can manifest secondarily to the Hashimoto's. If you're confused, ask your endocrinologist to sit down and explain it to you, that's why they get paid the big bucks, you have every right to understand what is going on in your own body. Best of luck
