Any tips on losing weight with Insulin Resistance?

I am 27/f and insulin resistant and cannot take my metformin without gagging myself. I've tried seeing a certified diabetic educator (and following her diet) and have worked with a trainer at the gym with minimal results. Does anyone have any tips other than taking those nasty drugs?

Yes. Work toward optimum physical health. I find that the better my diet and exercise routine, the less Metformin I have to take. Keeping fats to a minimum and taking a half teaspoon of cinnamon each day will do wonders for your insulin resistance problem. Getting your weight down is pretty essential, too.

I've found a wonderful book that will help you control your diabetes and minimize or even eliminate the complications. Some folks who became diabetic due to poor diet and obesity are effectively cured by following the advice in this book. I'm a type II (inherited), but it helps all types, especially those who became diabetic due to poor eating habits. It's by an author who has really done his homework, Patrick Quillin, Phd. It's called, "The Diabetes Improvement Program". I have tried his suggestions and found them to be very helpful. I have no complications whatsoever and my blood sugar levels are quite stable. Yes, I still have to take Metformin (Glucophage) daily, but it's the minimum dosage (500mg) and I only have to take it twice a day. I have been off Metformin for as much as a week, but this was with vigorous exercise. Many, what I call, non-hereditary type IIs (those that don't have a close relative who had it) have gotten off medication completely, just with diet, exercise, and supplements. So, in some instances, it most certainly can be 'effectively' cured. Read more about it here:

The book explains what's going on in our system and what to do about it. It's really easy and inexpensive. It's basically diet, supplements, and exercise. For example, did you know that cinnamon helps blood sugar absorption? It also controls cholesterol and triglycerides. This is according to the USDA:

i am sorry you are unable to take the metformin. it has so many beneficial effects for you, only one of which is the weight loss. have you talked to your doctor about your inability to take your medication, perhaps they have some tips or alternative dosing. diet and exercise is basically it and sounds like you have that covered. you may have to work at it longer than others though

I had an insulint resistance issue and was more than 130 lbs overweight when I first started. The best method that worked for me was to take a look at the glycemic index (GI) for each food. The goal is to eat the majority of your foods with GI index level under 100. There are a variety of sources of information on eating this way and specifically books that cover diets that help you follow this type of eating program.

What didn't work for me: High carbs, low fat...What did work for me was moderate fat (20-25%) and high protein (25-30%).

The problem with those with insulin resistance and weight issues is there's usually too much insulin circulating in the blood. We often think of insulin as a blood sugar lowering hormone, but it's also a fat storing hormone...and you probably have LOTS of it. Trying to keep insulin levels down is going to go a long way in helping you lose weight. But you have to understand that you have a metabolic problem and losing weight is not going to be as simple for you...of course you've discovered just how hard it can be. Check into the South Beach Diet. Many dieticians are recommending this diet for those with diabetes because it's balanced...unlike a lot of the low carb diets that are popular these days...and focuses on a combination of foods that do not cause a large spike in your glucose...and therefore does not cause a spike in insulin production. Don't give up on exercise. It's by far the best treatment for insulin resistance, but it's also the best treatment for all around health, including cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, things that are commonly associated with diabetes. As you continue exercising and building muscle you'll not only feel better, but you'll see the numbers on your meter AND the scale go down. Remember, it's taken years for your body to get this way, it's going to take some time to get it under control. It's frustrating when you're working so hard and not seeing results as soon as you'd like, but you're headed in the right direction. Don't let a scale discourage you. Hang in there.
