Scientific: homeostasis model assessment鈥搃nsulin resistance (HOMA-IR) is an empirical mathematical formula based on fasting plasma glucose and fasting plasma insulin levels that was developed as a surrogate measurement of in vivo insulin sensitivity:

The layman's definition: it is a measure of insulin. Insulin resistance is a risk factor for coronary disease so assessing an individual's insulin resistance may have some value. Other diseases associated with an increased HOMA-IR test are AIDS and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Polycystic ovary women have insulin resistance independent of obesity.
