Can a person with type 1 diabetes have insulin resistance?

I have been a type 1 diabetic for 40 years. The last 6 months I have gained 60 pounds.I have not changed my diet.I am a 43 year old male. Whats wrong?

Yes. This can happen. If some with Type 1 diabetes has a family history of Type 2 diabetes as well, and they are injecting large amounts of insulin for long periods of time, they are at risk for "double diabetes", which is basically Type 1 AND Type 2 diabetes, or Type 1 with insulin resistance.

A Type 1 diabetic who becomes overweight due to lifestyle can also develop "double diabetes". This is why it's important for *everyone* to follow a healthy diet the majority of the time.

That said, I am more concerned that you have developed autoimmune thyroid disease. Your risk is much higher because you have another autoimmune disease, Type 1 diabetes. This can cause rapid and severe weight gain that will not respond to lifestyle changes. You will need thyroid replacement hormone. Severely low thyroid hormone is a medical emergency, so please see your doctor for a test to rule it out.

There are also other causes for rapid weight gain, including some medications.

If you have gained 60 pounds in 6 months, I would see your doctor for a full physical ASAP.

If you do have insulin resistance, your doctor may add a Type 2 diabetes oral medication to your insulin routine.

im not sure, go to your doctor immediatly. see your body naturally makes insulin, so for your body to reject it would be impossible. maybe your metabolism has dramtically slowed down due to either the diabtes or aging. keep acitve, when winter rolls around we all tend to gain some weight.

The weight gain is not necessarily due to the diabetes. You should seek medical help but you probably need to take more exercise to burn off the extra unused energy.

Good luck. Seek help and don't despair.

That might be bad. Go see your doctor.

Your body makes little or no insulin if you are type 1. I would check w/ your Dr. about your wtg. gain . If you are still eating the same amount of food today as you did when you were 25
this maybe the reason. Sadly our metabolism slows down as we age .

no because your pancress is buggered and it doesent make insulin diabetics 1 can not be is resistance
