Medication for Insomnia? |
I don't have health insurance and have severe insomnia. I'm going to see my doctor Thursday, and need to get a cheap medication to treat my insomnia. I've tried most all of them at one point or another - many don't work at all. Lunesta doesn't work anymore and neither does ambien. What about Trazadone? make sure you let your doctor know you are uninsured and if he or she doesn't offer, ask them for samples if they have any. Ask also about Benadryl, some people can take that OTC to help them fall asleep for an occasional bout of insomnia. Pharmaceutical companies cater to doctors and give them free samples for a reason. If the doctor does give you an rx for a medicine, google it and see if the company offers any kind of rebate or free trial. Free trials for many meds can be found in lots of women's magazines also... tylenol pm? sominex it's a medication without prescription which is safe and works good. Add a little cognac, and then a little more, and a touch more - see if that helps!!! Hello- I'm a pharmacy tech. Trazadone is cheap. Amitriplyne is also cheap and does the same as trazadone. Melatonin, the highest mg, which I believe is 3mg. It is a natural sleep aid and has also been proven to reverse cancer. It cost anywhere from 6.00- 10.00 at Walgreen's. You will sleep like a baby Well, I think trazodone is fairly cheap. One thing about trazodone is that, unlike many other sleeping pills, the more you use it the better it works. My doctor told me about this before I started taking it and I didn't know if that would be the case with me. I was taking it when I was working night shift and having a hard time sleeping during the day for long enough. I started taking it and it didn't seem to do anything at first, but then one day I took it and I was asleep all day long and too sleepy to work that night. If over the counter sleep aids don't work you can try reading until you fall asleep, no stimulants such as TV, computer and radio. Or try having a glass of wine or lavender tea. All these things worked for me, after 3 kids, I was trying to convince my husband to knock me out, so I would sleep. I had to get creative, and the drugs can become addictive so I decided not to use them. Trazodone is an excellent med to put you to sleep. That is what I use. I don't sleep well due to MS. have you tried the herbal remedy valerian? you can get it at a health food store or walmart. it works, too. People act differently to medications...Trazadone is an older medication which is also an anti-depressant. I think in the beginning it was prescribed solely for that purpose, but when the physicians noticed how sleepy their patients were on it, it became known as a sleep aid also. Trazodone will knock you on your butt. I've taken ambien, lunesta and clonazepam. Trazodone worked fast and hard- had an awful lingering effect though. Cheaper than ambien and lunesta by far... first of all try excersizing before you go to sleep. shower and take some melatonin as directed on the bottle. try some milk or bread with it. trazedone is addictive and a narcotic...it's best to stay away from pills to help you sleep...if you go for a 5 mile walk early in the evening (take a friend or a dog) and get a lot of fresh air, eat a small meal 2 hrs before going to bed, THEN you will be tired enough to fall asleep...whatever you do, don't watch television in bed...it will only stimulate you and you won't fall asleep...plus you can do deep breathing to help get to sleep...breathe in for 10 seconds and then breathe out for 20 seconds...it causes your body to relax and you'll be asleep before you know it... Trazadone works for some. I believe it is a tricyclic antidepressant. For me, the best med was Seroquel...but I am bipolar so I don't take it strictly for insomnia. I have slept better using Seroquel than I ever have before in my life (always been an insomniac). It may be worth asking your doctor about trying a small dose of it (25 mg or so)...I don;t know your situation so I don't know that it would be right for you. But make sure the dr knows you dont have insurance...ask him for samples (they get plenty of them) if he wants to try a med that is not available in generic form. I had severe insomnia also and I was prescribed rozerem which is supposed to be really good but it didn't work for me. I would be up for 24-48 hours at a time. I found out that I have a thyroid problem and have been taking L-Tyrosine which is an over-the-counter vitamin/mineral pill and I've been sleeping every night since then. E-mail if you're interested in more information. Good luck!! Insomnia is often caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression or sometimes for no apparent reason. Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. Soak a tablespoon of mint leaves in a cup of water for an hour, drink every night. Check out http://useinfo-insomnia.blogspot.com/ for more info |
