Amyl nitrate.
It was used for all kinds of stuff, from a mild anesthesia to locker room deodorizer.
If you sniffed it (you really didn't snort it, it was liquid), you got a super-intense buzz, but it only lasted about 10-15 minutes.
If you carried on like that for a couple of hours, it'd leave you with a headache like a sledgehammer between the eyes.
Don't know if you can still buy it or not.

Amyl nitrate inhalers, commonly called "poppers" were sold years ago to "revive" people who fainted. That turned out not to be a medically sound idea, and now they're no longer manufactured and their sale is illegal. There are still a few unreported supplies of it around, and if you can find a dope dealer who has some, you can buy 'em for a couple bucks a pop.
They are little glass tubes wrapped in heavy gauze that you pinch in the middle, crushing the glass to release the contents into the heavy gauze. You won't cut your fingers, and you can get a concentrated whiff of the contents before it completely evaporates. Be sure your life insurance policy is paid, though - the risk of toxicity is very high. And be sure you're prepared in case you get busted for possession - jail ain't no fun!

Amyl Nitrate - medically used for heart attacks and other short term stimulus situations. When "sniffed" it causes the blood to rush to your head. I heard that it does this by "exploding" the blood cells in your head and new blood rushes in to replace, but I don't know this for a fact.

You can't buy them without a prescription. There used to be several deodorizers that contained it, or something like it and people sniffed it/them to achieve the same results, but they were dangerous because of the other ingredients and the fact that it wasn't a controlled doseage.
