What is the name of the drug used on a cloth against the mouth and nose to knock people out?

I am writing a story and I want to include the name of this inhalant.

Methyl-chloroform (usually referred to only as "chloroform"). And yes, you can also use ether, but it's not as effective.

Ether

chloroform

i believe it was ether. i'm not sure of the spelling, i did not google it...but i'm pretty sure that's it

Chloroform

It is chloroform.

chloroform

Chloroform is one, an old one and dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.
It can easily cause burns to the skin and can cause respiratory problems if too much is applied.
It is not to be used for fun.

"Writing a story," eh? Tell that one to the judge...

The drug is chloroform, used as general anesthetic in the old days, and used by kidnappers in the movies. A moist cloth is held over the mouth of the victim, and when they breathe it in, they fall unconscious. I believe that too much of it can be fatal. See the movie "Ruthless People" with Bette Midler, there are a few scenes involving chloroform.

Chloraform

chloroform

chloroform

i believe your looking for the word "Ether".
