Does all influenza virus originate from birds? |
Does all influenza virus originate from birds? nope you can get influenza viruses from pigs, cats, dogs and monkeys genetically altering themselves to infect humans. The spanish flu virus however was from birds, but the most likely source of a new influenza strain infecting humans is if it infects pigs first because pigs are quite genetically similar to humans. It's quite hard for flu viruses from other species to infect humans in a 'sustainable' way however, as they need to change alot of the surface proteins on their outsides in a process called antigenic shift.
