What information about influenza can you gather about the research being used to cure it?

Antiviral medications are being researched and being used. They can reduce symptoms somewhat and shorten the length of a viral illness somewhat - by a day or two.

There is a major problem though - viruses become resistant to antivirals - then the meds no longer work against that strain of virus.

There are four main antivirals now. Two of them no longer work on the seasonal flu that many of us are plagued with from time to time.

But they are working on new ones, and a fifth antiviral is in the process of being approved.

Viruses mutate so quickly that even though we will have immunity to one viruses that we've had, there are always new ones popping up.
