Can the mirena IUD cause infertility?

i want another baby but not for a long time. but i hear the IUD can cause infertility or misscarriage. the website didn't say anything about it... anyone know?

Yes it may cause infertility BUT its a small chance of it about .08%. The ways it causes infertility is.

1. at the time of removal the uterus is scared

2. From multiple untreated infections (which if you have multiple partners your at risk and the IUD makes it difficult to treat)

I have 2 children 14mo and 4yrs. I got this last November and love it. And my doc and I talked about the whole infertility thing and he says no. As soon as the IUD is taken out (by the doc) you can get pregnent at your next ovulation. If you have more ?? ask your doc.

it can certainly cause a miscarriage if you get pregnant while it is inside you, but this event is so rare anyway it really should not be a concern. it does not predispose you to future miscarriages. as far as infertility goes, i have never heard that myself. if you are high risk for pelvic infections, multiple partners, your partner with multiple partners, lupus, hiv, other immunocompromised status you may want to reconsider the iud. however, for most women in stable, monogamous relationships this is not an issue. you may have some spotting in the first few months but this is only temporary. since you have looked at the website i assume you are aware that you may not have periods on the mirena. i am a gynecologist and use a mirena also, i absolutely love it from my own personal experience and i have not yet had one pt asked to have it removed unless she was ready to get pregnant. i cannot say the same for the copper iud however, it causes heavy painful periods and i do see women requesting removal of the copper iud.
