What should I ask my doctor? infertility?

I asked a question a few months ago about fertility, and pretty much all my answers said get checked for PCOS.

I looked up symptoms of PCOS, and I don't really have any except for irregular periods, infertility (maybe?), and being overweight (but it鈥檚 well proportioned not just in the middle). No extra hair or headaches etc.

Well, I'm making my appointment and I don't know what i should ask, or how to bring up getting checked to make sure I can have kids. Even if I get checked PCOS, but what else should I ask?

Bit of history from the last question: Periods about 2-3 a year, haven't gotten knocked up in 7 years of unprotected sex. No STDs.

So what kind of questions should I ask my doctor to bring up the topic?

What answers should I except if you've been there? Can they "check" you, or do I have to be trying for kids before the doctor will bother with it?

Thanks!

expect...not except lol sorry

I also skip several periods a year, as mu body doesn't ovulate every month. I am symptom free otherwise, certainly don't match the standard profile for PCOS (the S stands for syndrome - as people with is have several characteristic symptoms as you mentioned). I was however diagnosed by ultrasound of my ovaries, with PCO. You can have polycystic ovaries and not develop a syndrome from it. I have about 15 cysts on my right ovary and 8 on my left. Enough to interfere with my cycles but still allow me to have regular cycles sometimes. Like the other lady said, ask for a pelvic ultrasound just to check. If they find lots of cysts i'd say thats the likely cause of any infertility you are experiencing. There are drugs you can take to force your body to ovulate.

Tell your doctor how infrequently you menstruate, and that you are planning on starting a family. With so few cycles per year, he/she should as a matter of course send you for a pelvic ultrasound and do some blood-hormone tests to check levels of lutenising hormone. These tests wont specifically just for polycystic ovaries, but will also tell you if there are any other structural problems, and whether or not you are ovulating. They will not make you start trying before they check you over.

I would tell your dr how few periods that you have in one year. You should ask him to do an ultrasound on your ovaries as well as blood work. I didn't have any excess hair or even irregular periods and I have PCOS so you never know.

Just be straight forward and let your doctor know about your concerns. He/she will ask about how long you have been trying and perhaps your doctor will have some tests for you. He/she may even require your partner to be tested for sperm count.

A family physician and an OBGYN is NOT what you need.

I strongly encourage you to see a doctor called an Reproductive Endocrinologist. They handle disorders of the endocrine system in woman......ovaries are part of the endocrine system. It is very possible you have PCOS and not have any of the classic symptoms.

I suggest blood work.....trans-vaginal ultrasound.....hysterosopinogram. You may need to go on clomid to "hyper-ovulate" but first you need to find out WHY your only have periods a few times a year.
Two questions come to mind....
1) are you an athlete?
2) are you a vegan?

You may want to also consider increasing your red meat and dairy intake. The human growth harmone contained within appears to help woman ovulate. I suspect you are simply not ovulating.

Please know that obgyns are so busy they do not have the time in their practice to treat infertility.

I wish you the best of luck!
Please repost in trying to conceive.....someone there may have the answers you need!

They can actually check to see if your ovulating on time or right period.I thought I was going to be infertile after I had my D&C and I got checked to see if I was ovulating right and everything came back right and then I got pregnant right after. All you need to do is be straight forward with your doctor and tell them you think you maybe infertile. They can do the ovulating test as well as many others.

I have PCOS but I exhibited all the symptoms except for being overweight and having diabeties. I even had the psychological symptoms including feeling like I'm different or there's something off about me. Your doctor will first take a blood sample to see if you have excess testosterone. The only true way to determine if you have it or not though is through an ultrasound of your ovaries. It is difficult if not impossible to have children with this syndrome. If you don't want to have kids and instead just want to regulate it since there is no cure, birth control pills are wonderful. I took Ortho-Tricyclene and now Yaz and both gave me regular periods and regulated my hormones. I definitely recommend this, even though it means you especially will not get pregnant. However, unless it is an extreme case, 2-3 periods seems pretty scant. Other things that can affect your period is if you have an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulmia. Also, if you exercise a lot this can lessen the amount of periods you have. Even though you say you don't have an STD, there are many STD's that don't exhibit outward symptoms like they do for men considering the fact that a males' reproductive organs are on the outside while the females' is on the inside. Of course, depending on your age, you may be infertal; or if you have been with the same partner for the past seven years they could be infertal. Good luck, and don't be scared to talk with your doctor. He/she will know a lot more about what could be going on.

Awww. I don't know. I have never been there.

I just wanted to say good luck!!! xxxxxx
I hope you have as many babies as me!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
