Is an abnormal period linked to infertility?

Ok, well, i have a really abnormal period. Like, I only get it 2 or 3 times a year.

I just read somewhere that abnormal periods can be a symptom of infertility. I mean, I know you can take pills to regulate your cycle...but what if it's something bigger? what if i can't have kids?

does anyone know anything about this?

also... i'm only 19. but i've had this problem since i started menstrating (about 5 years ago)

I would talk to a gynocologyst. i know that my older sister has irregular periods and found out that she had hypothyroidism. After that they became normal. It is a key factor into infertility but there are also many reasons why it is irregular, maybe it is hereditary. I would talk to the gyno now so that in the future you know what the plan is. In the future you might have to have infertility drugs or not. But I think that if you don have SOME periods you are not completly infertal and you shouldnt worry yourself sick.

An abnormal period can be a sign of problems, some of which cause infertility. If you have been having your period for five years and you only get it 2-3 times a year, you should discuss it with your doctor. That is not normal at all! Some things, are you under weight or on a diet? Do you eat and drink the appropriate amounts? What is your typical stress level? These are things that can cause your period to go awry.

Yes, talk to your doctor, but for what it's worth, my mom was the same way, and she still had 7 kids!!!

Not necessarily a symptom.....but it can make it difficult to get pregnant if you only ovulate 2-3 times a year....because you won't know when you are ovulating. Will be very hit or miss.

Don't get all worked up...go see an ob/gyn to help calm any fears. There are wonderful medical advances out there!
