To become a doctor in infectious diseases how long are you usually an intern ?

In the US to become a rank and file doctor is 4 years pre-med major 4 years med school 1 year internship

To specialize in anything and hold yourself out as a specialist requires at least 2 if not 3 years as a resident in that field, such as Infectious Diseases. You can generally hold yourself out to be a specialist in Infecitioius Disease after that point.

To become Board Certified requires 4 to 5 years with the last year as Senior or Chief Resident.

Then you have to pass a board exam

If you pass you get use call yourself a Board Certified or Diplomate in Infectious Diseases (D-ID I think it is)
