How long would I have to go to college to become a Diagnostician(doctor specializing in infectious diseases)?

I am about to start high school and I would like to know how long I would have to go to college to become a Diagnosician. It is a doctor who specilizes in infenctous disease and nephrology.Nephrology is the branch of internal medicine dealing with the studies of the functions and disease of the kidney.

There's no such thing, in America anyway. You can be an ID (infectious disease specialist), and they have 9-10 years of training past their undergraduate degree.

Nephrology is a different specialty. Here's info on Duke University's program:

Good luck with your studies!

First of all, the two types of doctor you are talking about are quite different.

An Infectious Disease physician specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of people with infectious diseases.

A Nephrologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of people with kidney disease.

Typically, physicians become one or the other. It would be very rare for someone to go through training for both.

Here is the time it will take:

1. 4 years of high school (18 years old)
2. 4 years of college (22 years old)
3. 4 years of medical school (26 years old)
4. 3 years of residency in Internal Medicine (29 years old)
5. 3 years of fellowship in either Infectious Disease or Nephrology (32 years old)

Then you can start practicing medicine on your own. You are a doctor after step 3, but still need further training. Good luck!

could be 8-10 yrs

That's amazing that you want to specialize in the exact same branches that Dr. Gregory House (played by Hugh Laurie) specializes in. As wonderful as the show, House M.D., is (don't get me wrong, I love it), a TV show is not a great way to choose a profession.

If you want to be a doctor, you should definately pursue it. However, you would probably be happier if you chose something that you loved. Just remember that nothing is the way that it is portrayed on television.
