How do some medications like Nasonex have side effects like viral infections?

How do some medications like Nasonex have side effects like viral infections?

Some of the nasal sprays that decrease inflammation, runny nose, etc. contain steroids. Steroids generally suppress the body's immune response to antigens.

While it keeps your nasal passages unclogged and relatively free, it also allows viruses (they have antigens) to enter. So, in theory, you might have a greater chance of a viral infection. However you body has more than one defense mechanism, so a viral infection is POSSIBLE, but the PROBABILITY is not necessairly increased.

It's listed in the package insert because there are FDA rules about what must be documented as possible side-effects. Doesn't mean its going to happen.
