Well, viruses and viral infections are but part of an essential field called infectious diseases. While a separate medical specialty, infectious disease in nursing and even in health-related careers is a vital part of medical knowledge as infections and infectious diseases are part of the population, being that some of the nasty diseases and even life-threatening ones are caused by viral particles.

Knowledge of their general structure and pathogenesis can aid in health-related research work as well as in diagnosis, respectively--two areas in healthcare careers that are of interest to those who seek a career in health-related areas. Of course, this is only one part of infectious diseases that a healthcare professional must be aware of because there are others that are important to note, such as diseases caused by parasites, bacteria, and even fungi.
