Ear Viral Infection?

I hope someone could help, i have been really dizzy for 3 days now i went to the docter and she told me its some viral infection and gave me some meds called Meclizine, well i was wondering why didn't the docter give me any antibiotics? or amoxicillin? people been telling me that she should of prescribed me one of those, i have some amoxilllin that is still good, should i take them? because this dizzy crap is ruining my life! thank you .

Ear infections can be caused by two things: 1. Virus 2. Bacteria. The doctor decides this based on the way your ear looks in the otoscope. Viruses do not respond to antibiotics- which is why the doctor didn't prescribe you any. The unnecessary use of antibiotics during a viral infection can actually be quite harmful for you and lead to resistant bacterial strains. I definitely do not recommend that you take your leftover amoxicillin for a viral infection.

If the viral infection is serious enough, it can move into your inner ear. The inner ear is what is responsible for your sense of balance and motion. This is what is causing you to be dizzy. The infection should resolve within a couple of days. In the meantime, follow what your doctor recommended and take the over the counter Meclizine. Brand names available at almost every pharmacy are Bonine or Dramamine. It's usually used for motion sickness but may be able to help your dizziness.

I hope you feel better soon. I had this same problem not too long ago!

Antibiotics do not work for viruses they only work for bacterial infections. The doc did not diagnose you will a bacterial infection so antibitoics are not needed. Do not take leftover medication with a docs ok. The meclizine is for dizziness. If it is not helping with the dizziness call your doc in the moring to let them know that it is not working, The doc has NO CLUE that it isn't working unless you call and tell them.

I dont think that its ear infection. Stop going on amoxicillin. that brings the immunity system's resistance down if used continuously. your dizziness might be one of the side effects of taking the antibiotic.
Try the Meclizine and check for symptoms.

ear infections can cause dizziness, which is a pain, be patient. If symptoms don't improve see your Dr. again.

You might have to be referred to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Your doctor would have to do that. Antibiotics are not for viral infections. It sounds like you have an inner ear infection and it can take weeks before you even feel right. Meclizine (antivert) is supposed to help with vertigo but it makes you really sleepy. I had this problem for the past two years in the winter. I found out I had it when my ear was aching and I kept getting dizzy spells. My doctor told me to go see a specialist so they help me with my equilibrium.
