How long does a viral infection usually last?

i went to the doctors bc i have these little red bumps in the back of my throat and swollen glands he told me i have a viral infection that was about it and i didnt get any antibiotics is this bad? what do i do?

It depends on the virus. Some viral infections will clear up in a few days, others will never clear up (ie HIV). The reason the doctor didn't give antibiotics is because they are ineffective against viruses. They only work on bacteria.

What you do is wait to see if the infection will clear up. Otherwise you treat the symptoms. Drinks lot of fluids and take Tylenol for fever. That's about all that you can do.
