Aren't bladder infections supposed to hurt?

I went to the doctor today because I was peeing often, but not a lot came out (mostly a trickle). He said he found a little bit of bacteria in the sample he collected and prescribed me antibiotics.

My question lies with my symptoms. I believe my doctor; I'm just confused. I only had a little bit of pain when I went to the bathroom, but not a whole lot. It mostly hurt just at the end. My bladder itself never hurt either. The only symptoms I had were a frequent urge to urinate, a sensation that I wasn't emptying my bladder completely, a generic "yucky" feeling, and darker urine than normal.

If I had waited, would it have gotten worse? Was this just the very beginning of a UTI?

Also, how long until my antibiotics start working? How fast did your UTI clear up?

Antibiotics are great because they work almost immediately. The not-so- good part is that you must take them all, or your UTI will come right back. Darker urine means you're not drinking enough water. Your urine is supposed to be clear; it shouldn't look like a sunset. Some bladder infections are unbearably uncomfortable. I think yours would have eventually gotten more uncomfortable, and you would have started bleeding blood. So it's really good that you caught it early. You'll feel great tomorrow! :)

sometimes you can have an infection and not knowing it. it'll take a few days or so for the medication to help. one time i had an infection that was creeping up toward my kidneys before i knew i had it, then my back began to hurt. so, yes it is possible to not feel it.

I've had that happen. Each infection is different. Last one I had just felt like cramps, it was odd. It should feel better in a day or 2. Drink lots of cranberry juice, it helps flush out the bacteria as well.

no it dont always hurt, infact bladder infections are very quiet untill it gets so bad that its painful and by that time your bladder is full of bacteria . So yes your doctor caught it in time. drink cranberry juice as well it cleans your bladder out...the medication will work immediatley like you will notice a difference in an hour, first pee will be orange (thats the meds) and if you did wait, you would of been peeing blood or red pee and painful...CAUTION..FINISH MEDS TILL bottle is EMPTY. bacteria growth has to be fully killed..

yes, if you had waited you would be hurting. it usually takes 3 days before the drugs will take full effect but make sure you take the whole prescription until its done or it could come back

I had the same before but ignored it and got a terrible fever. Another time I ignored it and ended up dying with pain upon going to the bathroom because my urine was full of puss. You went to the Dr. just in time my dear before it got worse. Antibiotics should start working withing hours and should clear up when medicine is finished, make sure to take it all. If your symptoms come back call the Dr. back you may need more medicine.
