Job Title: Infection Control Assistant

Purpose.......... To coordinate comprehensive hospital-wide infection control program in accordance with current standards of regulatory agencies and governmental and HCPC policies and procedures.
Scope............ Responsible for the day-to-day administration and development of delegated Infection Control program and special assignments.
Dimensions....... Indeterminate.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Required......... Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to:
Ensures Infection Control program is operated in accordance with JCAHO and other standards.

Monitors statistics on nosocomial infections, notifying administration when appropriate, in order to take steps in minimizing further problems.

Disseminates information to staff and public regarding infection control measures.

Provides infection control orientation to new employees and other personnel so that the program is not compromised by lack of information.

Prepares reports needed by public health authorities to ensure compliance with regulations regarding infection control.

Must be able to respond to emergency situations.

DUTIES
Typical........... Coordinates a comprehensive hospital-wide infection control program in accordance with current standards of regulatory agencies such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Harris County Psychiatric Center policies and procedures and applicable governmental regulations. Makes regular unit rounds. Maintains the Infection Control program in a consistently survey-ready state, meeting the standards and other requirements of the JCAHO, Medicare, and other certifying/licensing organizations. Assists in coordinating infection control policies and procedures. Coordinates surveillance activities, investigating clusters or unusual nosocomial infections, notifying administration where appropriate. Develops and implements a system for tracking employee illness to prevent or minimize the spread of contagious disease in the hospital staff, for the protection of staff, patients and visitors. Disseminates information regarding CDC/JCAHO standards as they pertain to infection control. Provides orientation, training and consultation to nursing, housekeeping and other personnel as needed; meets with them regularly to help coordinate infection control policies at HCPC. Assists, as necessary, in orientation and continuing education in-services on Infection Control. Prepares regular reports to appropriate public health authorities where indicated.
May perform other duties as assigned.

Periodic......... Functions as part of the Quality Assurance team. Performs appropriate activities as directed by various committee assignments.
SUPERVISION
Received.......... Reports to the Director of Quality and Standards.
Given............. None.
EDUCATION
Required.......... Bachelor's degree in microbiology, public health epidemiology, biology or related field; or registered nurse with current license with the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners.
EXPERIENCE
Required.......... Minimum of three years in hospital clinical experience.
EQUIPMENT
Required.......... Use of electronic terminals and standard office equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Usual............ Psychiatric hospital/clinical environment.
Special.......... May be exposed to infectious disease. Standard precautionary measures must be exercised.
PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
Usual............ In exercising these functions the incumbent must be able to exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Special.......... None.
