Is there any way to prevent chronic yeast infections caused by birth control pills?

I never had yeast infections until i started taking oral birth control pills. Over the years, I have switched brands, but still get repetitive yeast infections due to the hormonal change. I don't want to change my method of BC because I feel safest with the pill. Any ideas on naturally or chemically preventing yeast infections without quitting the pill? My Dr's just keep prescribing creams and diflucan and stuff like that... no real solution :S

Yeast be gone - I've gotten great results with both tea tree oil and hydrogen peroxide douches (alternating with 1-2 tablespoons of tea tree oil to 1 quart of water and 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to 1 quart of water for about 5 days straight). I also started taking acidophilus pills, 1 billion per capsule, three times daily before every meal. I will make it part of my daily routine after I'm cured as prevention.

Birth control should not cause yeast infections.

Try to eat at least two cups of yogurt daily to help maintain your normal yeast balance, never douche, and try to maintain the cleanliness of your vaginal area (i.e. keep the pubic hair manageable/trimmed--not shaven--wear only cotton underwear, always wear underwear, and wear underwear that is the right size).

Well, I know that applying natural yogurt can help to soothe the symptoms, and also making sure you get enough of the 'good' bacterias in your diet to combat the unhealthy ones can help. I would really recommend seeing your gyno for this one, BC pills shouldn't cause constant yeast infections, once you stay on the one pill for a while your hormones should balance out. I would be more inclined to think that there's an underlying problem of some kind (not necessarily the pill). If this is the case however, try reducing the dosage, if it's high dosage the hormones could be causing an imbalance in your body.
I'd make an appointment with your gynaecologist, in the meantime try the yogurt or any kind of anti fungal cream to relieve the symptoms. As for prevention, make sure your hygiene is always up to scratch, only wear cotton underwear and change it a couple of times a day, especially in the hot weather, and only ever use the 100% cotton pads and tampons. Good luck, I hope you can get it sorted out soon!

If you are taking a high dose level birth control pill, ask your doctor if you can reduce the level. This may help.

Do you use anti-bacterial soap in the shower? this could be the main cause - anti bacterial kills the bad and GOOD bacteria, and actually makes you more susceptable to yeast infections...Try switching to a mild soap like dove - but just make sure it is NOT anti-bacterial

I used to get a yeast infection right after i started bc, when my hormones were adjusting - but that was it

Hey,

I saw your post and thought I鈥檇 reply since I鈥檓 a summer intern for Nature鈥檚 Cure and have learned a lot about yeast infections and the various treatments available. One thing I know is that you don't have to resort to anything crazy (i.e. yogurt, garlic, etc.) to solve your problem!

As you've found out, yeast infections can be caused by hormonal shifts from birth control pills. They can also be caused by a weak immune system (caused by stress, poor nutrition or illness), using antibiotics, tight/poorly ventilated clothing or even tampons.

Since you have little control over some of these triggers or don't want to change the behavior causing the yeast infections (taking birth control pills), it鈥檚 a good idea to make sure you address the internal causes to really get rid of the yeast infections. That鈥檚 the idea behind the Nature鈥檚 Cure Yeast Infection Convenience Packs. They come with both all-natural tablets (taken orally) to really get to the source of the infection and also the traditional antifungal treatment for quick relief of the symptoms.

If you want something to treat the imbalance on an ongoing basis, Nature鈥檚 Cure also makes Yeast Control Capsules (which are taken orally, daily) to help your body maintain an internal environment that promotes yeast balance.

Hope this helps!
