How long does indigestion last?

I've been having bouts of indigestion for about a month, and then Saturday night had another, and it is Tuesday morning and I'm still having it. I'm not in the same kind of pain I was Saturday night, but am still burping. This is kind ofgross to talk about, but it is what I'm calling, "dry burps" because there is no taste to them, or the feeling of anything coming back up in my throat. Every so often I have a kind of knife like pain in my chest, kinda under the bottom of my left breast. If this is just plain indigestion, does it last this long? I've been taking some medicine for indigestion since Saturday night. Thanks

Gas will cause that pain under your breast. Indigestion and gas that lasts longer than 2-3 weeks needs to be evaluated by a doctor and possibly a GI Doctor.
If you are female please go for an exam. These symptoms that are NEW and persist for longer than 2-3 weeks can be the early signs of ovarian cancer which is a very progressive cancer. Women tend to just shrug it off as gastrointestinal when in reality it can be far worse. So, if you are female please see a doctor and be proactive with your health.
You can probably lesson some of the symptoms with over the counter zantac, but the dose is 75mg make sure to take 2 of those per day and try one a day over the counter prevacid.
These may relieve your symptoms until you get in to see someone. Plus if you are taking these before you see a doctor and your symptoms have not been relieved they may refer you to a GO Doctor to examine you and probably give you something like Reglan and order an upper GI Barium Swallow to have a better look at your digestive system.
And these medications Zantac and Prevacid will not harm your system if this is not your problem and if it is you will find some relief.
Hope you feel better soon.

Indigestion doesn't normally last that long -- in me at any rate. Of all the indigestion remedies available, I've found plain old bicarbonate of soda to be the most effective, and the fastest. You get used to the taste, which is not particularly agreeable, especially given the speed with which it acts.

However, if your indigestion is lasting longer than a day, I think you are better advised to consult your medical practitioner, as you may be producing excessive amounts of acid; and occasionally, indigestion-like symptoms can have other causes, which may need to be investigated and eliminated.

(I am not a doctor.)

You need to be on a really good digestive enzyme. When you eat, slow it down and chew your food very thouroughly until it liquifies...this will create digestive enzymes. Turmeric is also great for indigestion and mucous in the throat. My mother has suffered for a while with acid reflux. She couldn't go a day without her prevacid. I told her to start weaning herself off of that stuff and get on digestive enzymes along with chewing slowly and eating earlier in the evening. She has not had one bout with heartburn or indigestion since. She is so happy! Of course, go to your doctor to rule out anything else, but it sounds like indigestion. Good luck
