Are indigestion and heartburn the same thing?

I'm usually dealing with a pretty bad pain in my lower chest, usually right under the sternum or in that area. I've been taking prilosec for awhile to help. It is weird because I cut back on a lot of acidic foods and I stopped drinking soda completely. It helped for awhile. Now I eat things that aren't really acidic and sometimes STILL end up with that pain. Some of the foods I ate that gave me the pain were ice cream, bananas, bread and so on. After I ate them I just had a very uncomfortable feeling in my chest almost like I had to burp really bad or as if I were stopped up (sorry for the details). So i'm wondering if heartburn and indigestion are the same thing, if not can someone explain the differences in the two? And what can I do to help this?

I have the same issue. It is my gallbladder, I am just very careful what I eat and try to increase my fiber. Fiber is so vital for your digestive system. I started eating high fiber cookies and that seemed to help.

Not exactly.

Indigestion is caused by excessive gastric acid accumulation in the stomach. Sometimes excessive amount of food in the stomach. Excessive alcohol content would cause that as well.

Heartburn is when the gastric acids and content in your stomach goes to the esophagus. This phenomenon is usually more painful and causes internal burning sensation.

Hearburn usually happens when the esphincter (which function is prevent that the acids and content of the stomach go to the esophagus) between the esophagus and the stomach fails to keep the acids in the stomach.

no...they aren't the same
