Help with sudden acid indigestion?

Hi Everyone. Two days ago I started having bad acid indigestion, and it is getting a little better but VERY slowly. I have the following symptoms:

1.) Burning in the stomach/lower esophagus (gets very bad at night).
2.) Lots of gurgling/burping
3.) When swallowing, it at times seems like I can "feel" the food/beverage/saliva as it reaches about half way down the esophagus, and i feel it go all the way into my stomach. When it gets there, it gurgles.
The nighttime indigestion got so bad, I ended up vomiting (and then felt better). I obviously can't do this every night though, so does anyone have any suggestions?
I've been trying to alter my diet since yesterday to foods that would help to "soak up" the acid (ie: Bread, crackers, etc). Also cut out any bubbly or caffeinated drinks.
I have heard that baking soda (1 tsp) and water (8 oz) can help. I hate taking pills or tums or anything like that (I tried Pepto Bismol but it didn't help).
Does anyone have any suggestions?

What you have can be serious if diet does not change the results.
