Is milk good or bad for indigestion?

My husband has bad heart burn/indigestion. I suggested he drink some milk. He says milk makes it worse or is bad for you when you have indigestion...please help us settle this argument. It makes sence to me that milk would eat the acid and soothe the stomach and throat but he disagrees...whats the answer?

Sorry, your husband is correct. In general 'indigestion' is usually caused by an overproduction of gastric acid. Calcium is one of the most potent stimulators of gastric acid secretion. That is why you alway choose an antacid that is not calcium based (Tums are calcium based, maalox is not). The old wives tale about drinking milk or buttermilk for dyspepsia (our term for indigestion) comes from the way milk has a tendency to coat and temporarily soothe ulcer pains. If your husband is having to take a remedy for his indigestion more than 2 or 3 times per week he should talk to his doctor about further investigation. Hope this helps.
