How does Impetigo Spread?

A lady I work with has impetigo..she pronounces it "em-pet-ig-o" not "Impa-tego." She claims they are the same spelling but two different tyes of bacteria..She is now taking pills and using a cream, but today it had spread to more of her face. I'm just wondering if anyone has heard the different pronunciation..and if you know how it spreads..thanks!

Impetigo (Actually Prononced as-im-pi-tahy-goh-) Spelling or prononciation is not an important factor to discuss here. Impetigo is a superficial skin infection most common among children age 2鈥? years (rare among people not in this age group). It is a contagious disease. The infection is prone to people who play close contact sports such as football and wrestling, regardless of age. The name derives from the Latin impetere ("assail"). It is also known as school sores.

Impetigo is usually caused by the same streptococci strains as those that cause strep throat. It can also be caused by Staphylococcus infection.

Scratching may spread the lesions. The infection is spread by direct contact with lesions or with nasal carriers. The incubation period is 1鈥? days. Dried streptococci in the air are not infectious to intact skin.

Treatment may involve washing with soap and water and letting the impetigo dry in the air. Many general practitioners choose to treat impetigo with bactericidal ointment, such as fusidic acid (Fucidin) or mupirocin (Bactroban), but in more severe cases oral antibiotics, such as flucloxacillin (e.g. Floxapen) or erythromycin (e.g. Erythrocin) or Dicloxacillin are necessary.
It is important to dissolve the scabs with ointment because the bacteria that cause the disease live underneath them.

It spreads by direct and indirect contact and is quite contagious. I've heard it pronounced most often ' im-puh-TIE-go'. It is caused by Staphlococcus and Streptococcus bacteria. Antibiotic therapy, either by ointment or pills, is indicated for treatment.

I don't know much about it other than it's extremely contagious. I wrestled for 2 years in high school and we cleaned the mats with disinfectant every day to avoid it. If someone on the team got it, they didn't practice. It was as if they were injured.

spreads by touching or using any clothes that person did

it's spread through direct contact. IE: she scratches, then touches other places or even worse, someone else. I've heard it pronouced more often as in FIN tigo

You can say it any way you want. It spreads by direct contact. Anything the infected area has touched leaves bacteria behind. if you touch it you pick it up. Use good hygiene
