How is impetigo treated?

If you suspect impetigo, contact your GP as treatment should take place preferably before the child infects other children.

The treatment involves washing with soap and water and letting the impetigo dry in the air.

Many GPs choose to treat impetigo with bactericidal ointment, such as fusidic acid (Fucidin) or mupirocin (Bactroban), but in more severe cases oral antibiotics, such as flucloxacillin (eg Floxapen) or erythromycin (eg Erythrocin) are necessary.

It is important to dissolve the scabs with ointment because the bacteria that cause the disease live underneath them.

When can my child begin to mix again with other children?

A preschool child should not return to nursery school or playgroup until the scabs have fallen off and he or she is no longer contagious. Small children will touch and scratch their scabs and therefore run the risk of infection.

Schoolchildren can normally return to their classes after one week from the start of treatment even with scabs as long as they remember not to scratch or touch them. Above all, they must remember to wash their hands regularly and only use their own comb, brush, facecloth or towel.

It is important that the school fully understands the nature of impetigo, and that the presence of scabs does not necessarily mean that person remains infectious.

Good advice

Cut your child鈥檚 nails short and encourage them not to scratch their scabs, pick their nose, bite their nails or suck their fingers.


If your child already has eczema seek advice and effective treatment.


Always remember to wash your hands after having touched your own or your child鈥檚 scabs.


Teach your child to wash his or her hands regularly and always give them their own facecloth and towel.


Explain to your child why they need to pay special attention to hygiene and avoid touching their scabs.

If meds from the doctor are not clearing it up, you might want to try alternative medicine. I had it bad as a child and just grew out of it eventually.

If you have given your child antibiotics, then I am assuming you have taken him/her to see a Doctor. My son had it a few years ago, and after a course of the right medicine, it was gone in one week. Are you sure your Doctor has not misdiagnosed or given the wrong medicine. With the correct treatment, it should go very quickly.

it will go away on its own, just leave it be, its a virus like chicken poxs and it has to run its course, but make sure you are giving him/her lots of extra vitamin C it helps, plus you still can put a little sumething on it liek caladril if you want. hope this helps

We had to cover my younger brother's arms with loose gauze to prevent him from scratching the sores and spreading the infection. It took months to completely dry up. Just keep treating and trying to protect the infections to limit the growth.

toby's mum is quite right, Chinese medicine will cure it. My g/daughter was diagnosed and treated by her gp without success, the Chinese doctor gave her some natural meds and advised to bathe in a solution of porridge oats and water. Put the oats in a clean stocking and let the bath water run through them. Three weeks later she was clear, two years later it's not returned.

You may think the meds are expensive but compared to the pain the child suffers they're priceless
