HPV immunization...Guardasil?

Has anyone had these shots? Last year my pap came back abnormal and I tested positive for having a strain of HPV but I was told it could go away. I started taking vitamins and it did go away a few months afterwards. If my long term/serious boyfriend has HPV won't I just keep getting it from him? Would a vaccination be a good idea for me or is it too late? Thank you in advance. (it is not the type that gives you genital warts)

Changes in the cells of your cervix can result in an abnormal Pap test. Most of the time, if you are a teenager, your body will clear the HPV and the Pap test will become normal again over several years. However, sometimes the HPV infection persists in your cervix which can lead to cervical cancer. This is why your doctor will want to see you for follow-up visits if you have had an abnormal Pap test.

The Guardasil immunization cannot be given to someone who is not between the ages of 9 and 26. It does not protect against all types of HPV.

Some other immunizations like Cervarix are currently in testing and are more effective at higher ages, but are not available yet.

There is no need to fear the HPV... only some strings are cancer causing - just like only some cause warts. And the ones that are cancer causing only cause it in some fraction of the cases... not all.

Catching it early in the HPV state allows doctors to take preventative measures before cancer occurs.

You can get the vaccine for the strands you dont already have...there is over 100!!

Good luck!

The shot hurts like a beast. I got it just to be safe, because my ex boyfriend had a "habit" of lying to me. Yes, it's three shots, one now, another in two months, and the third four months after that. Supposedly, they are supposed to completely kill off the HPV strain and make your body normal and healthy again.

Because of the previous positive HPV status they will give you the shots. The shots are designed to prevent HPV which in your case it is too late for. Best thing to do is to continue safe sex practices and visit your OB/GYN regularly. HPV is not curable at this point, once you have it does not go away, it can become inactive.

I tested positive for high-risk HPV and got the shots anyway, because, as my doctor pointed out, there's no way I have all of the dangerous types right now, and the vaccine could prevent me from getting the other dangerous types. Protecting yourself is never a bad idea.

I would go back to your Dr. & have another PAP smear. HPV does not go away. Vitamins don't cure it either ....are you sure it was HPV. If you have it, the immunization would be useless. Make an appointment & talk with your Dr. about this because it doesn't sound like you have accurate info. The reason I am concerned is that if left untreated HPV can result in Cervical Cancer. Good luck!
