What is a defunctioning ileostomy? |
I am a student nurse and I am caring for a patient with Crohn's disease who has recently have a defunctioning ileostomy formed. hi, I am a crohn's patient who's had an ileostomy for 21 yrs. the term defunct means no longer in existence, operation, or use. A defunctioning ileostomy is a surgically created opening of a loop of terminal ileum brought up through the surface of the skin, usually in the right iliac fossa. The stoma will divert faecal waste away from the anastomotic site. After 4 weeks the patient will undergo a gastrograffin enema to confirm that the anastomosis is intact before the ileostomy is closed. An ileostomy is an opening (or stoma) of the small bowel onto the abdomen so that the motions then empty into an attached bag. Based on what I have been able to understand, an ileostomy is a surgically created opening into part of the small bowel (called the ileum), which is then brought out at skin level (called a stoma). There are essentially two types of ileostomy: end ileostomy and loop ileostomy. These are usually done with staples or sutures and are usually meant to be temporary. Defunction means destruction of a function. |
