What is a defunctioning ileostomy?

I am a student nurse and I am caring for a patient with Crohn's disease who has recently have a defunctioning ileostomy formed.
I have had difficulty finding out exactly what a defunctioning ileostomy is compared to any other kind. Most websites I have found have either not given me suffiecient detail or have given too much for me to make any sense out of.

hi, I am a crohn's patient who's had an ileostomy for 21 yrs. the term defunct means no longer in existence, operation, or use.

have you tried the crohns & colitis site or cld their hotline manned by professionals. you can reach them M-F 9 am - 5 pm EST. 1- 888.MY.GUT.PAIN (888-694-8872).

Also, try the united ostomy association of america's site. they have tons of info too and their phone # is listed on the top. hope this helps. also, try asking your teacher, a doctor, another student, heck even try calling a local colorectal surgeon's office and they can tell you too.

hope this helps. thanks for taking the time to care for crohn's pts. it makes it that much easier for us to deal with this disease when a medical professional takes the time to learn what have to go through each day.

A defunctioning ileostomy is a surgically created opening of a loop of terminal ileum brought up through the surface of the skin, usually in the right iliac fossa. The stoma will divert faecal waste away from the anastomotic site. After 4 weeks the patient will undergo a gastrograffin enema to confirm that the anastomosis is intact before the ileostomy is closed.

An ileostomy is an opening (or stoma) of the small bowel onto the abdomen so that the motions then empty into an attached bag.
Disfunctioning\= simply put, not working the way it was meant to.
There are many reasons why this procedure can become complicated. See the source list

Based on what I have been able to understand, an ileostomy is a surgically created opening into part of the small bowel (called the ileum), which is then brought out at skin level (called a stoma). There are essentially two types of ileostomy: end ileostomy and loop ileostomy. These are usually done with staples or sutures and are usually meant to be temporary.
Defunction: comes from the word defunct meaning "dead".
A defunctioning ileostomy would mean that the stoma has defunctioned the distal bowel

Defunction means destruction of a function.
Please note that I am not a medical professional.
Please see the web pages for more details and images on Ileostomy.
