I had my rectum removed and have a ileostomy, is it normal to feel like you have to go to the bathroom?

I have been diverted for 3 months now and just finished chemo & radiation. I started to feel and actually go to the restroom even through I have the ileostomy. Just wondered if this is normal - because it is painful and sometimes urgent

It's called Phantom Rectal Pain. Just like a person who loses a limb can still feel it 'itch', so our body has to get used to the fact that it can't go to the loo in the old way anymore.

If you still have your rectum and anus, you will probably be passing mucous when it happens too. It's all completely natural, although annoying. The mucous shows that your anus is still doing it's job in helping things slide along down there, even though there's nothing there to help along. The only way I found to alleviate the feeling was to go and sit on the loo even though I knew nothing would come of it.

The good news is that with time, the frequency will lessen and eventually disappear all together as your body becomes used to it's new plumbing.

Why are you asking here? Ask your doctor.
