My ileostomy for the last couple of days will send bubbles up to the surface and watery what is this from?

I have to empty the pouch several a day because it is really watery and foam comes up to the surface of the stoma. Could this be caused by a blockage?

This could be colostomy diarrhea or simply due to a change in dietary intake. Also enteritis can be a cause.
Please follow your doctors advice and consult your stoma care nurse.

It may also be a virus. Remember, it is sort of like having soft stool etc. Let your doctor know what is happening.

if you had a blockage then you wouldnt get the watery and bubbly discharge. maybe its the diet that your on?

The symptoms of a fecal impaction would include a distended abd nausea and vomiting a blockage does not sound likely. There is water naturally in the intestines to help soften stool and eventually excrete it. The foam is more likely gas, this is common and you just continue to "burp" the bag by letting the air out. Also assess the texture and color of the stool these two things can be helpful in determining if there is something wrong. If all you are draining from your stoma is the watery foam there may be an issue. If stool is being excreted the watery foam is no issue. Hope this helps!

it can be caused by a blockage as the liquid will bypass the solids.but you must assess for yourself.are you nausous?distended?lack of apetite? fever? is there a change in the entire consistency of the stools? if you answered yes to any of these please call your md asap. in general an ileostomy will have more liquid type stools related to where it is placed in the intestinal tract.the higher up the more liquid. goodluck;)michele
