Elective hysterectomy??

i have a friend who is 19 and she desperatly wants a hysterectomy. She doesn't have any medical reasons but so desperatly wants one i feel that she needs one. i've checked out web sites so that i can give her as much info as possible but the only sites to offer information are american sites. Could she have a psychological disorder?? Is an elective hysterectomy possible in a person of such a young age?? Where should i go for information??

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

They will probably not do an elective hysterectomy on someone so young. A hysterectomy takes away impt hormones which enable your body to protect its bones, etc. Menopause which comes after a hyster. brings hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, mood swings, and sometimes even facial hair growth.

I can't imagine any surgeon would do a hysterectomy on one so young without valid medical reasons. Maybe guide her towards counselling for help.

There is rarely a medical reason for a hysterectomy and no reason for an elective one. It'll put her into early menopause and that won't be any fun at all. It'll screw up her sex drive, she can potentially grow a beard, hot flashes, mood swings and a million other issues.

At the least she needs to talk to a therapist about this. I don't it's normal at all to think that way.

A hysterectomy is major surgery that puts you on bed rest for weeks and weeks. Plus it's permanent, so if she decided she wanted kids at 27, she'd be out of luck. Then she could theoretically sue the doctor who gave it to her without medical reasons. No doctor would take that chance.

i have had a hysterectomy at 32 (needed it)and it does have its disadvantages i cant not understand why she wants one, she needs to think about the future and children. if its is because she dont want a peroid there are birth control pills out there to reduce them. get her some help. she is still young and may decide later in life that she dont need one.i wish now i canhave children and cant. please get her some one to talk to about this issue.

I don't think any surgeon in his or her right mind would preform this surgery, she desperately needs to talk to some one either a family doc or councillor, she needs to understand what this will do to her body and her hormone levels and the fact she would have to be on pills the rest of her life and go for blood tests regularly. I was once told by a doc having a hysterectomy is similar to putting a walnut on a block of wood and giving it a smack with a hammer. In other words your hormones go right out of wack and cause an array of problems that are not easily dealt with, some times I realize hysterectomy is necessary but I for one want to hold on to all my parts till I can't any longer.

Why does she want one?

I don't know of any doctor who will do that. I've heard of mothers wanting one because they were done having kids and the doctors wouldn't because there was nothing physically wrong with them.

If it's simply because she doesn't want to deal with her period, then she can take birth control that will stop her period. If she doesn't want children, then again, she can use birth control. When she gets older, if she still wishes not to have children, then she can get her tubes tied. It's a lot less complicated then getting a hysterectomy.

I'm assuming you are in the UK? If so your friend would not find a gynaecologist (private or NHS) who would do an elective hysterectomy at this age without very good medical reasons.
A hysterectomy is a major operation and not to be undertaken lightly...as with all surgeries there are risks attached and no-one will will subject her to those risks just because she wants one. Although she may be sure she does not want children, there is always a chance that in years to come she may change her mind, another reason Dr's would be reluctant to operate.
Even if the ovaries are left, a woman who has had a hysterectomy goes through an earlier menopause than she would have and that in itself can cause problems.
It sounds as though your friend needs to speak to her doctor and maybe be referred for counselling as it is certainly unusual for a woman this age to be desperate for a hysterectomy.

it depends on why she wants a hysterectomy. why does she want one???
