Toatle Hysterectomy and Life After?

Hi Ladies. I asked a hysterectomy question on here and forgot to ask a few questions.
1). When having a Hysterectomy, how long is the Hospital stay?
2). After a " toatle " Hysterectomy do wemen still have to go for there yearly pap smears, etc...? ( I would not see why since there is nothing down there anymore but I do not know for sure) Thank you Ladies very much God bless each...

1. Hospital stay depends on how well the patient is after the procedure. Typically they stay for about 2-3 days. The recovery time for an open hysterectomy is 4-6 weeks and sometimes longer due to the need to cut through the abdominal wall.

2. A total hysterectomy removes the body, fundus, and cervix of the uterus. There would technically be no reason for a regular "Pap" but as women we do get infections and whatnot down there, so every now and then a checkup wouldn't hurt. Breast exams should remain as is!

Hope this helps you out some! Good Luck :-)

My sis in law just had one. Not sure about the hospital stay but she was still recovering a month later. She said you don't need pap smears anymore. You should still go for a breast exam though but you can do that at the regular dr and not the gyno.
Of course, you will go through the change of life so you should get on hormone therapy right away. My s-i-l is on the patch. Also, one thing she said was that it "feels different". You can tell that a part of your body is missing, so it may take some getting used to.

Good luck!

I had one, yes I still have to have a pap smear. I was in the hospital for 2 days. My sister had one, and when she had a pap smear a couple of years later, she did have cancer. Thank God it was caught in time. You need to talk to your Dr. He or she will answer all of your questions.
