Diabetic needing a hysterectomy...?

I have been an insulin dependant diabetic for over 35 years. I just found out i need a hysterectomy and i am a little worried. I still have a couple of doctors appointments before this is finalyzed, but it will be an abdomen hysterectomy do to a very large fibroid in my uterous.

I would like to hear from people who have diabetes and have had a hysterectomy. Please tell me what to expect and how your diabetes was taken care of after the surgery.

Anyone else who has had a hysterectomy, i would greatly appriciate any advice as well.

Thank you very much!

Make sure your doctor consults with your endocrinologist and he/she lays out in writing how to care for your diabetes.Make sure to include both hi and low sugars.
Try to have someone with you as much as you can.Bring your own testing supplies - to use in secret , and some foods or drinks for a low sugar.
Ask your doctor about getting a perscription for the pain pills before the operation. It saves you a trip when coming home.
You will take a while to recover so just take it easy. It's nice to buy yourself a new pillow or set of pillows for you to use at home.
Get out of that hospital asap. You will need someone to help you at home.
I wish you the best.

I wasn't a diabetic when I had mine, developed it several years after. But the surgery and recovery wasn't that bad for me. I had a total hysterectomy due to a very large fibroid, like you. The worst part for me was having to endure the hot flashes that came after. If you have your sugar under control, you shouldn't have a problem with the surgery. They will help you with the sugar control in the hospital and by the time you go home you will be able to handle it yourself. It's not so bad. Keep a positive attitude, work hard to keep your sugar at a good level and then know that you are in good hands after it is done.
