Elective hysterectomy?

I've been diagnosed with uterine polyps. My doctor wants to do a hysteroscopy and a d&c- I want a hysterectomy. My family has a history of early hysterectomy- mom, sis (diagnosed w/adenomyosis), and cousin, and I've had problems in the past. Very painful periods, heavy bleeding, migraines, heavy clotting, and I also need to note that I've had my tubes tied 10 years ago- so there is no interest in kids. I've researched info- but I need to know whether or not I can make the decision.

Usually I am very much against any elective surgery simply for the reason that so many things can go wrong. You did not say how old you are and I do not think that if all the females in your family had a hysterectomy you should have one too.

You wrote that "in the past" you had painful periods, bleeding etc. does that mean you do not have it now? Why has your doctor upon finding the polyps suggested a hysterectomy ? If you are still bleeding heavily and have long periods, definitely a hysterectomy is the right answer, but why not get another opinion?

Anyway I enclose the Mayo clinic site for further reading:

Keep your ovaries if you can. Otherwise, it's your decision and may it go well for you.

The decision is yours. I would encourage you to seek counsel from the doctor and also talk to the family about it. Also get a second opinion from another doctor.
