Serious question about hysterectomy.....need answers if you've had one?

My sister has a very large fibroid that the doctors say they'll try to treat with meds because she's having a lot of bleeding. However, if that does not work, they said she may need a complete hysterectomy ( removal of uterus and cervix)

Has any ladies out there have advice for her if she does get a hysterectomy? She is afraid and wants to know about the following:

--will it affect sex life ( libiddo)?

--will sex feel the same ( both to her or husband)?

--what physical appearances or health issues change after a hysterectomy?

I had a full hysterectomy with removal of my ovaries at the ripe old age of just 27.

Because my ovaries were removed I went straight into menopause which is HORRIBLE. But it also most defantly effected my sex drive. It was lack of hormones that caused that. i had and still barely have no interest in sex.
But if a woman is not having her ovaries removed a Doctor told me it actually INCREASES the sex drive as there is no longer an issue about getting pregnant as you can add spontanuity (sp).

Sex does feel the same as before except if, sorry, he goes deep as you are hitting a dead end and you feel that.

If she has not had an issue with abnormal pap smears she no longer has to have them. Yeah!
Apart from that there are no other real health issues.

It did not affect my libido, as a matter of fact my days of worrying about birth control were over. Its great not having to worry and it made sex that much better.

Sex feels the same for both of us

I had a hysterectomy back in 1999 and now I am going through menopause, getting the hot flashes and I have seen some changes in my skin. I have been given hormones, but I am so afraid of the side effects.

It takes about 6-8 weeks to recover from the surgery, but its worth it in the end.

No, it will not affect your sex life if you don't mess with the ovaries. You will find menopause could start earlier.

Sex is the same, if not better because you have no worry of pregnancy.

I noticed none.

She needs to get the medication and see if that works first, then see if taking out that one fibroid helps, if not, last resort is the hysterectomy. Also, make sure she is eating healthy, getting exercise and limiting stress in her life as much as possible.

I can say I haven't had a hysterectomy, but I have had fibroid tumors and thought you might like to know my story. I was 24 when my doctor wanted to give me a hysterectomy. But since I was single and had no children, that wasn't an option for me. I found a new doctor and he said he could perform a myomectomy, which is the removal of fibroids. I had the surgery and the doctor also had to reconstruct my uterus because it was so distorted. It's been 4 years since my surgery and I haven't had any major problems since. It was the best thing I ever did.
You don't say how old your sister is, but if she doesn't want to have a hysterectomy, have her talk to her doctor about this option. And if you live in the Pittsburgh area, I can give you a referral.
