Hysterectomy when your young?

I am planning on having a complete hysterectomy and I am only 25. They are planning on removing everything and doing it through the abdomen. I am having this done because of bleeding complications from a D&C. They did the D&C because I wouldn't get my period for 7 months at a time and all the blood was just sitting in there but not comming out. Now I have been heavy bleeding for 2 months after the D&C. I am really worried about getting a complete hysterectomy because I dont know anyone who has had one and I don't know what to expect. If there is anyone who has had one at this age or knows anyone who has had it done please let me know. I would like to know what happened and what the recovery time is and are there any complications or side effects with this procedure.

I'm sorry to hear this is happening to you. I saw your post yesterday too. My mom had a hysterectomy at 29 after complications with my brother but she was left with one ovary. Could they possibly do your hysterectomy vaginally? The recovery would be better. After my second c-section my ob/gyn gave me a sheet of paper and told me that he usually only gives them to his hysterectomy patients but recovery for me would be similar. So you will be recovering for at least 2 weeks, probably more like 4-6 weeks before you will be feeling real normal. Plus you will have the abdominal incision to keep clean and deal with and that really hurts...it even changes the way you have to sit up and get out of bed. You're going to need to be put on hormones and there will be some bleeding after having one. Don't be afraid to ask any questions you have to the doctor. That is what they are there for and this is your body. No question is stupid. I hope this solves your problem. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you feel better!

i would like to answer this question, but i am honestly scared to death of the same thing happening to me. i am sorry to hear of your loss, and hope you cope well with it. maybe you should get some counseling to help you deal with the loss, especially at such a young age.

just make sure the doctors put you on hormones, (i am sure they will) because without your ovaries, your body wont function correctly.

My mom had a hysterectomy at 23 after having four kids because of a complication with an ectopic pregnancy. I would imagine it's much like having a c-section as far as recovery goes, and I have had a few of those. It takes a few weeks to get back to normal, it's very sore and walking takes learning again.

Good luck to you and I hope that everything goes smoothly!

I am sorry you are going thru this. I had many young patients operated for this. I think they will not take out 'all' as you said, only the uterus. It will take approx 2 weeks to recover. You will not have bleeding after the operation, that is the only effect.
Good luck!
