Hypothyroidism????

im 14 and i have hypothyroidism. i know what it is and everything but i just wanted to know is it really thyroid disease cause on the bottle for cold pills and tylanol it says ask a doctor if u have thyroid disease. so is it okay to take it?? and also i have a groiter in my neck....will it go away?? i've been on medication for more that 2 years now and it hasnt gone down. any advice?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about four or five years ago. I've never had a problem with taking Tylenol, Claritin, Amoxcillin, ZPac. My doctors have always said that it was ok. You may want to check with your doctor just in case. I've never had a goiter, so I can't answer your question about that. Just be sure to take your thyroid medicine everyday.

its a life long illness. your goiter should go down

I'm 15 and hypothyroidism runs in my family. I know that thyroid hormone pills stop the progression of the goiter, but you may have to get it removed if it is difficult to swallow...

I saw that radioidone therapy with or without pre-injection of synthetic thyroid may reduce the goiter from up to 30-65% (and reduce the obstruction)

(I have SOME symptoms but not all, only fatigue and so forth, but I doubt I have it..)

Hope this helps..

The warnings are more so for those that are hyperthyroid, as these over the counter products can increase heart rate, etc.

About the goiter...perhaps you aren't on enough thyroid medication. You need to always test in the morning getting the morning TSH around 1.0.

Another option to look into is the free t3 level to make sure you are converting T4 into T3.

Hi Donna, I am Hypothyroid, actually Athyroid, meaning I don't have one at all, I was born without one. So I have been on Synthroid my whole life. It's no picnic, I know.
My wife also had a growth on her thyroid that made it almost impossible to swallow. They didn't call it a goiter, but they did say it was a non-cancerous growth. She ended up having it removed, just because it didn't do her any good having it there.
I would go to the doctor and have him refer you to a endocrinologist(A Specialist in the endocrine system that includes the thyroid) The Specialist will have the best advice about which meds you can take, and what to do about your goiter and other side effects you may have from being hypothyroid. But the best thing you can do is take your meds every day, and never take more than prescribed! It'll do more harm than good.
