If hypothyroidism goes untreated, can i still have kids? |
I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) at birth and was told that if i didnt take my pills everyday then i could get brain damage but when i was 16yrs old i stopped taking my pills as they were making me feel tired all the time and since then i've felt ok, a bit of thinning in my hair but other than that ok. I'm 19 now and read that Hypothyroidism, if untreated can deny me having any children in the future. Low thyroid levels in kids do cause lower IQs, since there are not enough hormones to supply the fast metabolic needs of brain cells. That is why your doctor told you that. That will also be an issue for your child if you are still hypothyroid, since the child relies on its mom for thyroid hormone while a fetus. there is a risk thyroid hormones are important for regulating metabolism and the pituitary- ovarian axis hormone balance ,if u dont take them u could be infertile ,its essential ,,hope this well help u out I have never heard that A) not taking your thyroid pills will give you brain damage, or B) you can't have children if you're hypothyroid and untreated. Where did you hear this from? Consider your source. It has been 3 years since you stopped taking thyroid hormone. I think you should go for a thyroid profile that will decide if you are euthyroid. In that case you won't need to take the pills. This is more important than thinking about having kids. If you are hypothyroid you must take pills as advised by your doctor. It becomes even more important when you decide to have kids. We cannot help you. Who can? Your physician. please, and i urge you to have that treated. that is very important. the pills are fairly inexpensive. the last thing you need is thyroid cancer. Yes, definitely hypothroidism if not treated proves to be an obstacle for conception, but it neednt be the only cause. There can be many more like obesity, sugar, etc. |
