At what temperature does hypothermia set in? |
I'm referring to the temperature of the air in the outside environment of a person or an animal like a cat or a dog. My question assumes prolonged exposure to the cold with minimal to zero shelter. Hypothermia occurs when body temperature falls below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Determine this by taking your temperature. Warning signs include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and exhaustion. You are right on target. What people need to be most wary of is when it's in the 50's with moisture or wind, because this is when the emergency rooms get the most people with hypothermia. This is because we get sloppy and don't take a jacket with us and need it later, when we get caught out in the weather and lose our body heat. |
