Seizures and Hypothermia in a baby?

My son was diagnosed at three weeks with IS, which was downgraded to just a seizure disorder becuase he had no developmental problems. When he was about 6-7 months old, his seizures stopped. He had a high fever of 105.1 a couple of weeks ago from the flu and that triggered more seizures. The second time he had seizures, he had two that day, one 20 minutes and one 10. He was bundled up, wrapped in blankets, and everything becuase it was cold outside. They took his temperature and said he had mild hyporthermia. They wrapped him in warming blankets and his temperature dropped another degree. They said it was related to the seizures and that his had been strong enough to cause some sort of temporary imbalance. Anyone out there have any idea about this? They only tell me to give him his meds, but never educated me about what could happen. My man's brother has seizures and he said the same thing would happen to him. So why do seizure victims get so cold?

During seizures the body's heat regulating mechanism just goes haywire and does not function. The body also uses a lot of energy during the contracting and relaxing of the muscles you see in a tonic/clonic seizure. This lowers the blood glucose in the blood and there is not as much fuel to produce the heat which is lost. It takes time to get the glucose out of the body's storage system and doing the job of heating the body up again. It is very common.

In this particular seizure it was the body's way of lowering his body temperature which was way too high. Its called a febrile seizure. The body did what it needed to do to protect itself.

I am confused. Seizures in babies are often a result of HYPERTHERMIA like the 105 you reported鈥攏ot usually from hypothermia. The treatment for hyperthermia is often cold baths to get the temperature down to normal. Once a child has a febrile (hyperthermic) seizure he is more prone to developing epileptic seizures in the future. Such children are usually put on a tincture of barbiturates until they have been free of seizures for several years. Check with those who have been treating him.
