How would you know if you have hypothermia?

You might never know because in a severe case, you gradually lose consciousness and then you die.

From what I've heard, however, you start out shivering, but then as your muscles become too cold, they cannot contract any more, and that shuts down the shivering response - and that is very bad because once that stops, you lose the heating effect of the muscular activity and the heat loss accelerates.
