Orthostatic Hypotension? |
i just got diagnosed with this, but the doctor wasn't very clear...does anyone know exactly what it is and what meathods are used for treating it? Orthostatic Hypotension is pretty much when you change position from lying/sitting to standing up and your blood pressure decreases. You will often have a headache, dizziness or a 'rush to the head'. Best thing to do is avoid sudden standing up, just get up slightly slower to lessen the effects. You should NEVER leave your doctor's office without being 100% understanding of any condition or treatment. Call him back and have him explain it to you again. basically it means your blood pressure goes low, when you go from lying to sitting to standing. I think this is when your blood pressure drops when you stand up. It can cause you to become lightheaded if you get up too quickly. Orthostatic hypotension is also known as "postural hypotension;" this just means that your blood pressure is dropping rather substantially when you go from lying down to sitting/standing, or from sitting to standing. The treatment depends on the underlying cause; if you are on a medication such as a diuretic or medication for high blood pressure, you may simply need to discontinue that medication (ONLY on the advice of your doctor). If the cause is neurological, then you should probably consult a neurologist to determine the appropriate course of treatment, if your doctor has not already referred you to one. What you have already read is true. The underlying cause could be from many things. To treat it are many methods/drugs. Midodrine, decadron, some ssri's, and a host of others. Are you having any other symptoms and how low does it go? The reason I am asking because I just had a family member pass away from a disease called Amyloidosis. Very rare and causes a multitude of things. If you have had your urine checked and it shows a high protien level, research this more. If you don't, then nevermind. Compression stockings are also used sometimes in this condition. I am very curious. If you would, please email me personally regarding this. I have a ton of knowledge regarding this due to what happened to my family member. Even if you are not with this disease, I do know just about every thing they would try on you and why. I could explain more personally. inkspotter2000@yahoo.com. |
