My 57yrs old is having thyroids surgery. how can I know what to expect.?

my mom is 57yrs and is hypotension. she is getting some pain on her chest and she is coughing alot. The thyroids is kind of large and is located at the base of the neck. I am very worried about her. what are her chances for a successful operation?

Thyroid surgery is common. It depends on if its a subtotal or total thyroid removal. From what you describe as an enlarged gland, it is overactive stimulated. With the removal, she can expect to be on thyroid replacement for the rest of her life, Synthroid probably. It will be adjusted over time to compensate for the gland being removed. She should fair well with the operation and as long as she is complaint with her medication she should have no serious problems. It might be wise to consult with a doctor about using radioactive iodine to destroy enough of the gland that she might not have to have surgery. Just ask the doctor that she is seeing any question or fears you may have. If they are professional he will explain all possible options and education of what is expected before and after surgery. Always remember, its your right to be informed of all possibilities. Hope this helps!
