Hypoglycemia and diabetes? |
im pregnant with my 3rd child,i have never had diabetes and no one in my family does either. at about 8 weeks prego, doctor at er said i have hypoglycemia and put me on pills for 7 days. then at 30 weeks prego i took a glucose test fasted for 10 hours and it came back borderline so they are sending me for 3 hour test. Im wondering, does this sound like its diabetes?? is hypoglycemia same as diabetes? im just hoping 3 hr test comes back ok,but worried because of the hypoglycemia. thanks Hypoglycemia just means your body is absorbing most or all of the glucose (sugar) because your pancreas is overactive and producing too much insulin. Hyperglycemia or diabetes is just the opposite. Your body doesn't absorbs enough of the sugar because your pancreas isn't producing enough insulin. What you may have is gestational diabetes. Gestational refers to pregnancy. It occurs because the foreign object (the fetus you're carrying) has messed with your hormones and body functions, so everything is out of wack. Also, even though they said you were hypoglycemic the first time, it can turn around and you can be hyperglycemic (diabetic). Hypoglycemia is the result of having too little blood sugar(glucose) and you usually only have to eat sugary foods to bring it up like hard candy. Diabetics take insulin when there blood glucose is too high which is known as HYPERglycemia. When diagnosed with diabetes they test to see if you are hyperglycemic or if you have impaired glucose tolerance (borderline diabetes) Are you sure the doc didn't say hyperglycemia ? Pregnancy aggravates preexisting Type 1,and Type 2 Diabetes, but does not appear to exacerbate diabetes retinopathy, nephropathy,or neuropathy.Gestational diabetes can develop in overweight, hyperinsulinemic, insulin resistant women or in thin insulin deficient women. Gestational Diabetes will affect 1-3% of all pregnancies, and a much higher in certain groups.Mexican American.Asian,Pacific Islanders,American Indian etc.Gestational Diabetes increases fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality.Neonates are at risk for respiratory distress,hypoglycemia,hypocalcemia,hyper... polycythemia.Poor control or preexisting or existing GD can increase risk of major congenital malformations, increase risk of very large birth weight,Greater than 4500 grams, even if plasma glucose is kept nearly normal. Your OB-GYN is spot on with the screening, follow up, and treatment. He's being vigilant and taking all the proper precautions. The outcome will hopefully be a healthy & happy baby. Take care.
