Hypoglycemia - what is the best test?

My housemate is a nurse and having talked to her about my symptoms she suggested I might have hypoglycemia. I went to the doctors and had a fasting glucose test with result 4.5. I read somewhere on the internet that that isnt the best test to use - can anyone confirm? Thanks

fasting glucose is perfect.
It tells us if you haven't eaten anything for over 8 hours what your body maintains your blood glucose level at.
PERFECT for testing hypoglycaemia.
If you had hypoglycaemia you would have has a significantly low blood sugar level (BSL or blood glucose level/BGL) like around 3 - 4mmol/L. normal BSL is 5-9mmol/L.
If you are really worried carry a candy bar or some sugary soft drink around and if you start to feel pale or dizzy/light headed then have a bite or a drink and that should help.
If this is a continuous problem go back to you GP and ask for further tests. There are others but a fasting BGL is pretty a top test to decide if you have hypoglycaemia or not.

True. It's not the best way because the test may catch you in a pattern of a few days where your levels are normal.

Some drugstores (like Walgreens) sell really cheap blood glucose monitors and strips over the counter. For at least 2 weeks you should test at least 2 to 3 times a day. Usually right when you wake up/before you eat and then about 2 hours after you eat.

Be sure to follow directions in the manual and discuss the results with your doctor. At home testing allows you to go about your normal daily life and see where your blood sugar is at on average. It'll help you become more aware of what you eat, when you eat, and how it affects your body's overall energy level and performance.

Hypoglycemia rarely requires medical intervention. For most it's just a matter of learning how to eat better and more often. Several well-rounded smaller meals 4 to 5 times a day are better than 2 or 3 big meals and some snacking.
